Final Vessel of Large Palestinian-Supporting Flotilla Intercepted by Israeli Forces
This final ship of the 42-strong humanitarian flotilla attempting to breach Israel's decade-plus maritime embargo on the Gaza Strip has been halted by Israeli naval units.
Mission Interception and Deportation Processes
Per official declarations, procedures are now ongoing to deport the about nearly five hundred activists currently in holding. Including those apprehended are four Italian lawmakers who are anticipated to return to their home country on a planned aircraft.
Last Boat Details
Footage from Thursday night depicted the last vessel being manned by six activists, including multiple Turkey's individuals, a German national, and an Oman's activist. The Australian commander of the ship declared via live stream: "We have a contingent of highly resilient Turkey's activists onboard... we're just going to persist in our path."
Per a mission representative, the vessel had become part of the flotilla delayed after inclement weather compelled it to return to harbor in Barcelona.
Previous Precedent
This halt marks the closest any unauthorized relief attempt has advanced to the Gaza shoreline since Israel established its maritime restriction in 2009. The boat was apprehended when it was approximated to be forty-two point five nautical miles from the coast.
Earlier efforts by activists to breach the sea blockade have been prevented by force. In twenty ten, a dozen Turkey's participants were lost their lives when Israeli commandos stormed the lead ship as it headed an relief fleet toward the Gaza Strip.
Further Ship Details
Another sailing boat called another participant seemed to have ventured into Gaza's maritime zone, idling 9 nautical miles off the coast before being intercepted. However, organizers indicated they had been unable to reach with the boat's personnel some time before.
"It could be a tracker glitch or a system issue with the monitoring," remarked a spokesperson. "We will only have confirmation after making contact with the crew, which is not possible right now as they are being held by Israel's forces."
Present Status
The detained participants from the flotilla are being moved to Israel where they will face deportation processes. Several activists on this latest flotilla, such as high-profile participant the Swedish activist, have been earlier apprehended by Israel's forces while trying to break the restriction.
Historically, activists held by Israel have typically not been faced legal charges and their involvement has been handled as an border control issue rather than a judicial offense.
